Toshiba to Withdraw from Nuclear Plant Construction, Chairman to Quit
This is big news today! The Toshiro-Westinghouse reactor design has been one of the only “new” reactors actually getting built in the world. Plagued with years-long delays, manufacturing flaws, and billions-of-dollars cost overruns, and not a single AP1000 actually operating anywhere – but still, with several reactors getting built, it has been one of the most “successful” new refactor designs.
But its problems have caught up with itself, and nearly bankrupted Toshiba – leading the company to completely terminate the reactor and get out of the business of designing and building new reactors. This is a bad sign for the nuclear industry. So cheers to that!
