Final Energy Bill Vote Could Occur Friday!
Reach Out and Call Someone Today!

The U.S. House is expected to vote on the energy bill today (Thursday, July 28) and the Senate could take its final vote on the measure tomorrow.

This is our last chance to try to stop this travesty before it becomes law!

Call your Senators, then reach out and ask everyone you know to call their Senators as well. And if you have time, call your Representative today too. While e-mails to Congress are great, phone calls are much more effective.

Few, if any, Congressmembers even know what is in the 1,000+ page bill at this point. Numerous items were added in the conference committee—such as an additional $2 Billion for the nuclear industry in "risk insurance" to cover licensing "delays" caused by citizens groups, state and local governments, etc., that point out problems with nuclear projects. And late last night, Rep. Henry Waxman (R-CA) found a provision mysteriously inserted into the bill--after the conference committee finished its work--that would give $1.5 Billion of your money to Halliburton and companies located in Tom DeLay's (R-TX) home district!

Provisions to encourage renewable energy and reduce oil consumption that had been approved by the Senate were dropped by the conference committee.

For the best analysis of the nuclear provisions of the energy bill, go to Public Citizen's website at: http://www.citizen.org/cmep/energy_enviro_nuclear/electricity/energybill/2005/articles.cfm?ID=13779

At the very least, Congress should delay its vote until after the August congressional recess—so that Members and staff have time to actually read the bill and understand what is in it: billions of dollars of your money to the polluting nuclear and fossil fuel industries, and a pittance for development of the sustainable energy technologies that can help mitigate climate change and provide our country with clean, affordable energy.

Thanks so much for your help. This may be our last chance to stop congressional approval of taxpayer funding of new nuclear reactors in the U.S.!
