Energy Bill Reaches Senate Floor—Act NOW!!
The Senate will be taking up the energy bill this week: it's time to turn up the pressure!
The exact sequence of events is unknown, and, in fact, so are the amounts and types of subsidies for nuclear power that will be in the bill. The McCain-Lieberman climate change bill has one set of subsidies, and that bill likely will be voted on as an amendment to the full energy bill. (An analysis of these subsidies, prepared by US PIRG, is available on NIRS' website, www.nirs.org). In addition, the Senate Finance Committee will consider nuclear subsidies as well, and these are likely to be added to the energy bill.
While the legislative process is complex, the message for you is simple: Please call your Senators and tell them No Subsidies for Nuclear Power. Capitol Switchboard is 202-224-3121. Two toll-free numbers that seem to work are: 1-888-355-3588 or 1-877-762-8762.
When you've finished calling, please ask your friends and colleagues to call as well. It will really take the combined voices of all of us to defeat the nuclear industry.
Then, you can send an e-mail to your Senators by going to http://www.nukeretro.com. Enjoy the Mark Fiore animation, and then click on the link to the action page.
Finally, if you haven't yet signed the Petition for a Sustainable Energy Future, please do so now, at http://www.nirs.org and forward it to your friends too.
Thank you for all of your help and activism!
