Environmental Groups to Petition DOE to Abandon Yucca Mountain as Site for High-Level Nuclear Waste Dump

Recent Scientific Findings Trigger Disqualification

WHAT: Press conference to release a petition from over 200 environmental organizations to the Department of Energy demanding that the DOE disqualify Yucca Mountain, Nev., as a possible nuclear waste dump. Recent studies have brought forth convincing evidence that the site, which has been under scientific investigation for 20 years, must be disqualified as current law and DOE regulations require. DOE's response to the unquestionable scientific data has been to push aside these studies and attempt to rewrite the rules to ensure licensing of the dump. The environmental community rejects these unscientific and purely political approaches.
