Help Stop the Nuclear Resurgence! Please support NIRS!
Dear Friends:
If you've been receiving NIRS alerts, you know what's going on.
You know that George Bush is doing more to promote construction of new nuclear reactors than any president since Richard Nixon.
You know that the secret Cheney energy task force set the energy policy agenda for Congress: and given that Cheney met more often with the nuclear industry than any other, it is no surprise that a revival of nuclear power is at the center of every energy bill Congress has considered for the past four years.
You know that nuclear power is not the answer to the real issue of global climate change. Instead, building new atomic reactors would be an impediment, diverting scarce resources from the energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies that can really make a difference.
We're not afraid to say that; in fact, we've published the most comprehensive report available on nuclear power and climate change; you can find it on the homepage of our website, http://www.nirs.org.
And you know that NIRS is staying on top of the issues, alerting you when you can make a difference. For example, when we first learned that Sen. John McCain was considering adding nuclear subsidies to the McCain/Lieberman climate change bill, you heard immediately from us.
We were probably the first to tell you the House of Representatives was considering a pro-nuclear energy bill—and you can count on us to keep you informed of the more crucial Senate action, which will heat up soon.
We'll soon be letting you know the optimum time to weigh in to help prevent deregulation of large portions of the radioactive waste stream. How you can help stop the new Mobile Chernobyl threat. How you can support wind power and viable energy alternatives. We do our best to make our Alerts both timely and effective for you.
We try not to overwhelm you with information, but rather to let you know when you can act when it means the most—while our website, updated daily, always has current developments and background materials for you to use. And when that's not good enough, you can always contact us for more.
All of this is free—for you.
It's not free for us. We have to pay staff, and rent, and phones, and office machines, and computers and all kinds of costs to do the research and get the information necessary to give it to you for free. Running NIRS costs more than $2,000 a day, 365 days a year.
That's not much compared to the $25 million or more the Nuclear Energy Institute alone will spend this year promoting a nuclear revival, but it's a lot to us.
We rely on our members and supporters to help us pay a significant part of those costs. If we can't pay them, we can't do the work that's more necessary now than ever.
So, while we try not to ask you too frequently for your help, we do so now. Please make your most generous donation possible to NIRS, either by contributing online at https://secure.campagne.com/Donation/donate.aspx?id=58 or by sending a check to NIRS, 1424 16th Street NW, #404, Washington, DC 20036. Your contributions are tax-deductible.
As an added incentive, every contribution of $100 or more this year will be matched, dollar-for-dollar by a long-time NIRS donor. In addition, contributors of $100/year or more will receive our new monthly publication, The Atomic Watchdog, which is available only by regular mail.
But even if you can't afford $100, I hope you'll contribute what you can. Donors of $35 or more will receive the biweekly Nuclear Monitor, full of breaking news and analysis of nuclear and energy issues, either by mail or e-mail, whichever you prefer.
And donors of any size at all will receive our grateful appreciation and our thanks for your activism and concern.
Please don't forget to sign the Petition for a Sustainable Energy Future, on NIRS website at http://www.nirs.org/petition/index.php?r=ft and please ask all your friends and colleagues to sign as well.
In upcoming days, look for a new computer animation from NIRS and Friends of the Earth on the Bush administration's nuclear energy policy. And more on the energy bill. And information on plans for the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl catastrophe. And a lot more.....
Thank you so much for your help and support.
For a nuclear-free future,
Michael Mariotte,
Executive Director,
Nuclear Information and Resource Service,
