Plutonium
Fuel Impacts Georgia
The Department
of Energy is planning to pay DCS (an international corporate consortium)
to build and operate a new factory at the Savannah River Site (SRS) to
make experimental nuclear reactor fuel out of plutonium from nuclear bombs.
Across the Savannah River from Augusta and upstream of many Georgia communities,
50 years of nuclear bomb production has made SRS an environmental liability
to Georgia.
Making plutonium fuel at SRS will make matters worse:
-
20 more years of plutonium handling at
the site;
-
New types of radioactive waste would add
to the mess at SRS. More than a million of gallons of new liquid waste
would be added to already leaking waste tanks;
-
Secret transportation of tons of plutonium
through the Atlanta metropolitan area – only a small percentage of the
material is at SRS now. I-20 is a likely route;
-
Handling bomb plutonium is risky: the
1999 nuclear accident in Tokai, Japan at a uranium fuel factory -- plutonium
can be trickier;
-
WE PAY FOR IT – our taxes pay for this
federally funded mission of the Department of Energy. There are alternatives
for plutonium – it can be declared a waste NOW and stored with highly radioactive
wrapping to make it more secure.
-
Georgia Power has an interest in using
plutonium fuel in the Vogtle reactors south of Augusta. Plutonium causes
more cancer deaths in the event of a reactor accident.

NIX-MOX IN GEORGIA!!!
WHAT ANYONE CAN DO!
-
Visible opposition – letters to the editor, contact GANE about a vigil
at SRS on Nagasaki Day (the Nagasaki bomb was plutonium) – your idea here!
-
Educate elected officials and hold them accountable – tell Georgia’s
congressional delegation to
CUT THE MONEY FOR PLUTONIUM FUEL -- call often!!!
(Capitol Switchboard: 202-224-3121)
-
BOYCOTT Duke Energy – Duke does not sell electric power in Georgia yet,
but they do sell natural gas since the market opened to competition. Don’t
buy from Duke, and let them know why…contact Georgians for Clean Energy
to support their NIX Duke effort.
-
Support the INTERVENTION to STOP the new plutonium fuel factory at SRS.
Contact GANE – intervening on all our behalf to lend your support ($, volunteer
time, etc.)
