After a bitter decade-long fight, the final nails in the coffin of the
environmentally racist Private Fuel Storage (PFS) high-level radioactive
waste dump were delivered on Sept. 7: the U.S. Bureau of Land Management
rejected PFS's plans for hauling irradiated nuclear fuel to the
reservation, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs nullified the lease
agreement between the pro-dump, disputed tribal chairman and PFS. This
victory sends a strong message to the nuclear establishment: "No
Nuke
Waste Dumps on Native Lands!!!"
NIRS wishes to thank and congratulate Margene Bullcreek and her
organization Ohngo Gaudadeh Devia Awareness (OGDA), as well Sammy
Blackbear, the Bullcreek and Blackbear families, and other Skull Valley
Goshutes whose determination and perseverance in opposing the dump --
despite the long sacrifice, threats, harassment and punishment they have
suffered -- has protected their community and its future generations
against the deadly risks of radioactive waste. It has been an honor and
a privilege to work with them in winning this tremendous environmental
justice victory.
