Resolution Against Radioactive Waste and Materials Dispersal In Consumer Products

Whereas there is no safe level of exposure to ionizing radiation;

Whereas the harmful effects of radiation, even at very low levels, are known to include sterility, birth defects, genetic damage and mutations, immune problems, cancer and death;

Whereas much remains unknown about the impacts of particular radioactive materials alone and synergistically with other pollutants, on the human body and environment;

Whereas we are already exposed to ionizing radiation from nature, medical procedures, and air and water contamination from the nuclear fuel chain;

Whereas any additional radiation increases the risks to the health of current and future generations;

Whereas radioactive wastes and materials from nuclear power and weapons production and testing have generally been stored under regulatory control;

Whereas the nuclear industry and nuclear agencies nationally and internationally are pushing for deregulation of nuclear wastes and materials from the atomic power and weapons fuel chains with the intention of releasing these materials into public commerce for reuse, "recycling" and unrestricted disposal;

Whereas release of radioactive materials and wastes into commerce and their unregulated disposal will lead to increased exposures to ionizing radiation and its associated risks;

Whereas these increased exposures to ionizing radiation will be prohibitively expensive to monitor and extremely difficult or impossible to identify and avoid;

Whereas such exposures will be involuntary and provide no benefits to the recipient but do pose a serious health hazard;

Whereas the only ways to prevent this avoidable health hazard is prevention of release with the goal of total isolation of radioactive wastes and materials;

Whereas consumers and employees will rightly wish to avoid products contaminated by or made with radioactive wastes and materials;

Whereas [BUSINESS NAME]’s business mission is to provide products that are safe and desired by consumers and avoid products that are unsafe and undesired by consumers, while protecting the safety of employees;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT [BUSINESS NAME]

Refuses to allow its business to assist the spread of additional, involuntary, unnecessary, avoidable radioactive exposures from deliberate deregulation, release, and dispersal of radioactive wastes and materials into commerce and the environment;

Refuses to buy or sell any materials or products from or made from materials that were at or contaminated by nuclear power and weapons fuel chain facilities;

Demands a prohibition on radioactive releases into commerce or unlicensed disposal;

Insists that radioactive wastes and materials be regulated and isolated from the environment and public for their entire hazardous life;

Demands the recapture and isolation of radioactive wastes and materials previously released into public commerce and unrestricted environmental disposal;

Insists that all costs of isolating and managing radioactive wastes and materials be borne by the generator;

Opposes the use of radioactive waste and materials in unregulated, unlicensed materials and products;

Declares those previous exemptions for specific uses (such as ionization smoke detectors, lantern wicks, tritium exit signs, and thorium glasses) do not form a precedent to allow use of additional products that utilize radioactive materials without strict regulation and licensing;

Calls on all public officials at all levels to oppose and prohibit the deregulation of radioactive wastes and materials for "clearance," "release," "recycling," "exemption," listing as "below regulatory concern," or any other legalistic mechanism that results in dispersal of nuclear wastes and/or materials into public commerce or unrestricted environmental disposal, or in any way being treated as nonradioactive.
