TOWN OF WADESBORO

NUCLEAR WASTE TRANSPORTATION RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, according to documentation provided by the State of Nevada which indicates that high-level radioactive waste may be transported through Wadesboro as early as 1998 should HR 1020 or similar legislation be enacted by the US Congress; and

WHEREAS, Wadesboro does not have adequately trained emergency response personnel or equipment to cope with a radiological disaster that could occur as a result of high-level radioactive waste transportation through this city; and

WHEREAS, the federal government, under HR 1020 and similar legislation, would limit funding to Wadesboro for training of emergency response personnel and for purchase of necessary equipment to cope with a radiological emergency; and

WHEREAS, property values are likely to fall, attraction of new business is likely to fail, and improvement of the community may become difficult or impossible should high-level radioactive waste be transported through Wadesboro; and

WHEREAS, this high-level radioactive waste would be transported to an "interim" site in Nevada, and thus does little or nothing to solve the nation's radioactive waste problem; and

WHEREAS, we generally oppose high-level radioactive waste transportation through Wadesboro;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Wadesboro is on record as opposing HR 1020 and all similar legislation which would require high-level radioactive waste transportation near or through this jurisdiction; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Wadesboro supports creation of an independent presidential review commission to reexamine our nation's radioactive waste policy; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Wadesboro will carry this resolution to all of our elected state and federal officials.
