RESOLUTION NUMBER 269

WHEREAS, a public hearing was held by the United States Department of Energy at the America’s Center on January 20, 2000 to consider the possibility of moving nuclear waste by means of ground transportation through the St. Louis metropolitan area; and

WHEREAS, the St. Louis Board of Alderman considers the threat inherent in transporting such potentially dangerous materials through heavily populated areas so overwhelming as to merit complete rejection of the idea; and

WHEREAS, the Board of Alderman, whose duty is to act to maintain the safety and welfare of the residents of the City of St. Louis, cannot stand by and remain silent in the face of such high-risk activity;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Alderman of the City of St. Louis as follows:

  • We strongly urge the Department of Energy to forgo entirely the concept of shipping deadly nuclear waste through our community;
  • We strongly urge that, if such shipments are forced upon the City of St. Louis despite its adamant opposition, such shipments be delayed until reliable safeguards can be established to protect the citizens of this city;
  • We direct the Clerk of this Board to provide copies of this resolution to the Department of Energy and all members of the United States Congress who represent the interests of the citizens of the City of St. Louis.
