RESOLUTION NO. 4293, 2000

Introduced by Councilmembers O’Mara, Dooley, Young, Cunnane, Odenwald, Wagener and Quinn

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, a public hearing is to be held by the United States Department of Energy at the America’s Center on January 20, 2000 to consider the possibility of moving nuclear waste by means of ground transportation through the St. Louis metropolitan area; and

WHEREAS, the County Council considers the threat inherent in transporting such potentially dangerous materials through heavily populated areas so overwhelming as to merit complete rejection of the idea; and

WHEREAS, the Council, which is obliged to act to maintain the safety and welfare of the residents of the County, cannot stand by and remain silent in the face of such high-risk activity;

NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNTY COUNCIL OF ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MISSOURI AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION 1. The County Council, on behalf of the people of St. Louis County, urges the Department of Energy to forgo entirely the concept of shipping deadly nuclear waste through our community.

SECTION 2. The Council further urges that, if such shipments are forced upon St. Louis County despite its adamant opposition, any such shipment at least be delayed until completely reliable safeguards can be put in place to protect the residents of our County.

SECTION 3. The Administrative Director is directed to provide copies of this resolution to the appropriate state and federal agencies.

ADOPTED: JANUARY 20, 2000

JAMES O’MARA, CHAIRMAN, COUNTY COUNCIL
