WHAT YOU CAN DO

As we hope the article makes clear, Temelin won’t be stopped only in the Czech Republic. It must be stopped in the U.S. too. And stopping Temelin will provide a major blow to the world’s leading manufacturer of nuclear reactors, Westinghouse.

You can help:

First, write to the Export-Import Bank, and demand that it:

1: Suspend all payments for Temelin at least until the bidding irregularities (described in "Eye on Westinghouse) are fully investigated. You could also demand that the Ex-Im Bank stop all payments, period.

2. Require the CEZ (the Czech electric utility) to keep its promises (made to the Ex-Im Bank) and release relevant safety and environmental documents to the Czech public, as required by law.

3. Require the CEZ to complete a western-style Environmental Impact Statement, as it has promised.

4. Under no circumstances should any more U.S. taxpayer money go toward Temelin. If they can’t complete it for what has been spent to date, then it shouldn’t be completed.

Next: Westinghouse is quickly becoming a media powerhouse. It owns CBS-TV, as well as a string of TV and radio stations. It has sold off all of its consumer products divisions, and may spin off its industrial power section as well. With two of America’s three major networks controlled by nuclear reactor manufacturers (General Electric owns NBC-TV), it’s time to let them know that the airwaves shouldn’t belong to the nuclear industry. Turn off CBS, and turn off nuclear power. And write CBS; let them know why you’re no longer watching that network. Or, you could just pick CBS News, and stop watching that, but let Westinghouse know what you’re doing. With just a little effort, this could become a major national campaign. As CBS advertiser Nike says (write them too!), just do it!
