NIRS is an information and networking center for citizens and environmental organizations concerned about nuclear power, radioactive waste, radiation, and sustainable energy issues. NIRS has members on both sides of the U.S./Canadian border throughout the Great Lakes Basin downwind and downstream from the Bruce Nuclear Power Plant. On behalf of our members, NIRS submits the following comments on the Bruce Nuclear Plant Environmental Assessment (EA).

NIRS endorses the comments of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility, Great Lakes United, and the Sierra Club of Canada regarding these matters. We look forward to testifying at the upcoming oral hearings regarding our concerns, and request that you reserve a speaking slot for us to take part by telephone from our Washington, D.C., U.S.A. offices.

NIRS requests that CNSC incorporate our previous comments regarding affairs at Bruce into the record for this proceeding, including:

Sept. 13, 2002 comments opposing the application from Ontario Power Generation to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to designate the WWMF (Western Waste Management Facility) as a nuclear installation under the Canadian Nuclear Liability Act.

Comments on the Proposed Restart of Bruce Nuclear Plant “A” Reactors 3 and 4, September 30, 2002.

Comments on the Proposed Restart of Bruce Nuclear Plant “A” Reactors 3 and 4, Dec. 12, 2002.

Sept. 24, 2003, Re: Bruce Nuclear’s application for a five year license extension for the Bruce A and B reactors.

Thank you for your careful consideration of our concerns.

Sincerely,

Kevin Kamps
