It's Baltimore's turn to stop Calvert Cliffs

MOST IMPORTANT MEETING YET TO STOP CALVERT CLIFFS-3

DOWNTOWN BALTIMORE, SEPTEMBER 17, 2009--BE THERE!

September 9, 2009

Dear Friends,

Wednesday was the first public meeting on the merger between Constellation Energy and Electricite de France (EdF). The meeting held in Annapolis offered Chesapeake Safe Energy Coalition members and allies an opportunity to deliver the message, "No Deal" to the Public Service Commission.

Next Up: Baltimore, September 17th at 7pm. RSVP here to let us know you'll be there!

This is the most important meeting yet in the battle to stop Calvert Cliffs-3. It's essential that as many of us who oppose this boondoggle as possible come to this meeting and show our support for a No Deal vote by the PSC. Some key points from those who spoke in Annapolis on the negative impacts this deal could have on Maryland and its ratepayers:

* The deal would commit Marylanders to a third nuclear reactor,
set to cost at least $10 billion. BG&E ratepayers won't be able to
afford electricity from a reactor that expensive.

* BG& E ratepayers are not adequately protected if the nuclear
project experiences cost overruns.

* The deal positions French nuclear developer EdF to have
significant influence over energy decisions in Maryland. The company
has a poor corporate track record that includes illegal anti-competitive
practices, espionage and suppression of renewable energy development and
energy efficiency implementation.

But Constellation's not taking this lightly. They're calling in all their favors to turn out people to say glowing things about nuclear power and Constellation's corporate citizenry. In fact, they packed the Annapolis hearing with politicians and people who have received money from Constellation. And that's only half of it. Constellation is taking corporate influence to the next level. According to an article by the Baltimore Sun, Constellation has launched an expansive and pricey PR campaign to "sell" the deal to Maryland residents.

The good news is that concerned Maryland ratepayers carry more weight than Constellation's expensive campaign. So, the key to turning the tables on this raw deal is standing up to Constellation on September 17th. Let's make sure as many of us as possible are there!
