Public Comments sought on NRC's Plans for future management of Byproduct Materials
Public Comments sought on NRC's PLANS for future management of Byproduct Material, including the traditional so-called "Low-Level" Radioactive Waste and, due to the expansion of the definition of 'Byproduct Material' by Congress, management of some Radium and Naturally Occurring and Accelerator Produced Radioactive Material, not previously under NRC jurisdiction.
1) NRC is assessing its role in managing commercial "low-level" radioactive waste—
Should NRC continue efforts to license new dumps, to deregulate nuclear materials, to use 10 CFR 20.2002 to assist in analyses that allow nuclear waste to go to regular or hazardous dumps, or other options to be sure the nuclear power industry has a cost effective ways to get rid of liability for its radioactive wastes?
Comment Deadline extended until September 5, 2006
Federal Register July 7, 2006, Volume 71, Number 130, pp 38675-38676
2) NRC is assessing how to manage some Radium, Naturally Occurring and Accelerator-Produced Radioactive Material, which Congress has put under NRC authority. A danger is the precedent that radiation levels existing in naturally occurring radioactive materials will be used to justify deregulating licensed materials. Other concerns exist as well
