Stop NC Senate Bill 3--Say No to Prepaid Nukes and Coal

Last week the North Carolina Senate passed a bill that would give NC energy giants Duke and Progress Energy the green light to charge us electric customers NOW for all costs (including licensing and permitting) for future new nuclear power plants — in North Carolina — AND also any other location (South Carolina? Florida? Indiana?) that would supply power to North Carolina service areas...and this would also apply to new coal power plants as well. Known as "construction work in progress" (CWIP) this essentially would make anyone with an electric bill the fiscal sponsor of new nukes. We are already paying for new nukes in our federal taxes; North Carolinians would pay three times — CWIP, federal taxes, and then again when our bills double or triple if new reactors come on-line. The good news is that a growing No New Nukes campaign is working to keep that from happening!

YOUR ACTION NOW CAN STOP this dirty power bill in the North Carolina House. See below for specific action steps — sorry this can't wait — act TODAY!

For a detailed commentary on S-3 and what is wrong with it, visit NIRS ally the Canary Coalition: http://avram.sustainablewnc.org/ or to read the bill itself -- http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/Sessions/2007/Bills/Senate/HTML/S3v2.html

To see info on positive legislation that NIRS and Canary Coalition helped inspire — the NC Energy Future bill, HR 1825 -- see http://www.canarycoalition.org/News/070503.htm#H1825

Sadly, the dirty power in S-3 is wrapped in green energy "pajamas." Originally the brainchild of the Clean Energy Coalition of North Carolina as a Renewable Energy and Efficiency Portfolio Standard bill, S 3 was subverted in the Senate, and utility-backed "construction work in progress" and many other degrading provisions were added. Don't be fooled — we can get Green Energy — but we are going to have to fight for it — not roll over and accept the unacceptable at the same time!

What to do: Forward this ALERT to all your friends, family, groups you attend

Call, email and write to your NC Representative, House Speaker Hackney and Energy Committee Chair Harrison (contact info below) — short message: No Nukes, No Coal, No Kidding — pass a real renewable energy and efficiency bill! Support and strengthen HR 1825 — the Energy Future bill.

Attend House Energy Committee Hearings — if you can get to Raleigh Monday July 16 (4 pm) or Tuesday July 17 — attend hearings held by the NC House Energy Committee. If you want to testify contact the House Energy Committee Chair at 919-733-5771...filling the room sends a strong message — so come even if you are not going to testify — and visit your Rep's office as well.

Talk it up! Attached is a file with a small hand-out like a business card — that you can print out and get others to make these calls as well!
