Stop the new Energy bill! Sign the Sustainable Energy Petition Online!

January 5, 2004

Dear Friends,

With Congress reconvening this week, it is just a matter of days before we'll see a new omnibus energy bill introduced for serious consideration, probably by Senate Energy Committee Chairman Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) whose recent book calls for vastly increased use of nuclear power.

While we don't yet know exactly what will be in the bill, we do know what won't be in it: a commitment to end nuclear power, to clean up radioactive messes, to implement strong new energy efficiency and sustainable energy programs.

Instead, we're going to see proposals for huge new subsidies for the nuclear power industry, new support for coal and oil interests, reauthorization of the Price-Anderson Act—the nuclear industry insurance scheme that prevents you from protecting your loved ones and home from a nuclear accident—and much more.

Last Congress, with your help, we stopped the energy bill. It's going to be harder this session, and we need your help more than ever. We will be letting you know details about the bill as soon as we know them. We'll be informing you about the progress of the bill as it moves through Congress, and alerting you when your actions can make a difference.

But the first thing to do is to sign the Petition for a Sustainable Energy Future! While we've received more than 1,000 signatures already on paper versions, you can also sign it online at http://www.nirs.org. And when you've finished signing it, take advantage of our "send to a friend" feature and ask a friend or two to sign as well.

When we obtain enough signatures, we'll be distributing the petition throughout the Senate, to let them know the direction the American people want taken in an energy policy. Thanks for your help! Your actions now will help make the difference!

Best wishes,

Michael Mariotte Executive Director Nuclear Information and Resource Service nirsnet@nirs.org
